As a Sector Skills Council, ConstructionSkills is responsible for representing employers’ skills needs and for tackling the skills and productivity needs of the sector.
SSCs have been set up by the government to determine how training is delivered and funded in the UK, and to implement UK-wide Sector Skills Agreements (SSAs) between the bodies responsible for training and those that demand it.
The ConstructionSkills SSA is a collaborative agreement between construction employers, training providers and Government. It covers the whole construction industry, from craft to professional, both new build and repair and maintenance, across the UK.
Collaborative solutions have been developed to address the following priorities for action that have been identified through consultation and research:
Shaping up the Industry’s Performance
- Increasing SMEs investing in training by 300%
- Lifelong Learning creating bottom line business benefits
- Developing leadership and management skills needed for effective supply chains
- Developing skills for sustainability
Brushing up the industry’s existing skills
- Intensifying and widening the industry’s Qualifying the Workforce initiative
- Developing flexible training structures for specialist occupations
- Integrating migrant labour to bridge the skills gaps
Stepping up the Quality of Qualified New Recruits
- Increasing apprentice completions by 400%
- Improving understanding of career opportunities and proving work based practice
- Encouraging more women and ethnic minorities to join and stay in construction
- Increasing quality applications for construction-related degree courses
The Sector Skills Agreements provide solutions for addressing these priorities. These will ensure the right training is being delivered in the right format at the right time for employers and individuals in the workforce, to improve the performance of the industry.
