NCC Community Projects

Recently confirmed as Europe’s largest construction training provider, the National Construction College (NCC) now trains more than 40,000 adults and apprentices across the UK each year.

NCC, which is the direct training division of CITB-ConstructionSkills, provides more than 250 different construction training courses to adults and young apprentices . Courses cover everything from Health and Safety, through to Plant Operations, General Construction, Access and Graduate Appreciation Courses.

Based at Bircham Newton in Norfolk since 1966, NCC’s East campus is the largest of its kind in Europe. It has more than 450 acres of training facilities, including over four acres of covered training areas – much of which is put to use for practical operative training.

The college‘s mission is to work closely with industry stakeholders and its students to support the building of a world-class construction industry, and to be recognised as the training provider of choice for the construction industry. NCC East was recently awarded the British Safety Council Sword of Honour, the highest accolade for health and safety, making it one of only 40 organisations worldwide.

NCC is a great example of how learning and local communities can be successfully brought together. It is not just a college; it is more like a university, which sits within the heart of its local community – with leisure facilities used by community groups. Staff and students are enthusiastic fundraisers and volunteers, supporting the community in a number of ways, including the provision of a wide range of construction services from building nature gardens for schools, to resurfacing car parks and sponsoring sports teams. NCC is always looking to ensure that the impact of its community projects is positive. When providing support on such projects, the college does not charge for its labour, but materials do have to be provided. The college only works with local groups or charitable concerns – the type of work often performed does not get done if it’s not completed voluntarily. The college does not enter into competitive tenders or deprive local companies of work.
