DfE Performance Tables
Over the past year we have been working with the Department for Education (DfE) to include a number of our qualifications in the 2017/18 school and college performance table lists. The tables have been designed to coincide with the educational reforms set out by Government. The DfE refer to Level 2 qualifications as Technical Certificate Qualifications and Level 3 as Technical Level Qualifications.
What are the performance tables?
The performance tables are comparison tables that are produced each year by the DfE. They show the successes and achievements of colleges and schools by comparing learners’ grades. Not all qualifications are in the performance tables however, GCSE’s, A-Levels and a number of our qualifications are included as they meet the DfEs requirements for approval.
What are the Department for Education's requirements for approval?
There are a number of characteristics that need to be met for approval of qualifications in the performance tables. The main characteristics focus on the design principles of the qualification:
- Externally set and marked knowledge exam
- Synoptic Practical Assessment (SPA) completed at the end of the study period
- Grading – we have implemented Distinction, Merit, Pass and Fail across the performance table qualifications
- One exam attempt and one resit attempt. If both attempts are failed the learner must return to a new session of learning.

Synoptic Practical Assessment and Knowledge test
The practical assessment and the knowledge test must now be completed at the end of the learners’ study. It cannot be broken up into units or parts. This is a requirement by the DfE to allow for comparability of vocational qualifications to GCSE’s and A-Levels.
We have redesigned the number of resits that are available to learners. Learners will have 2 attempts at the knowledge test via our test platform. If the test is not passed on both the initial test and the re-sit, the learner will have failed and must return to a new session of learning.
A new session of learning is classified as re-registering the learner in the next academic year which begins on the 1 September. Learners who have failed both the test and the re-sit will have to be re-registered on Awards Online. We have issued an addendum to the Qualifications and Credit Framework Requirements for Approved Centres to reflect the requirements that the DfE have set out. The addendum can be viewed on the Quality Assurance page.
Changes to delivering qualifications in the performance tables
You will need to choose to opt in to the performance table qualifications or opt out – this is completed at the point of registration on Awards Online, please consult the Awards Online User Guide.
Changes to registering learners on Awards Online (August 1st 2016)
For any qualification registration for a candidate the centre must select mandatory field of funding method. If a ‘Performance Table Funded’ method is chosen, this will trigger the additional rules that have to be adhered to that are outlined in the addendum to the Qualifications and Credit Framework Requirements for Approved Centres above.
The full list of funding methods shown is only available for training qualifications. One of the funding methods must be selected at the time of registering the learner. Awards Online will not let you progress if a funding method is not selected. This funding method can be changed at a later date in the ‘Candidate Record’ as outlined below:
Where a learner has failed one or more units within a qualification, the learner will have to be re-registered on the qualification in a new session of learning. A new session of learning is classified as re-registering the learner in the next academic year which begins on 1 September. When a centre re-registers a learner on the same qualification, the attempted qualification will be shown on Awards Online and marked with ‘Failed’ in the achievement grid.
Awards Online Stored Batches and Failed Batches
Any stored batch and/or failed batches which have been saved prior to the live date of 1 August 2016 will require the centre user to select a funding method for each learner before they are able to submit the batch. Awards Online will not let you progress until funding methods have been selected. Any stored batches or new batches that are completed prior to 1 August 2016 will not be affected.
