What is a Roof Slating and Tiling apprenticeship? 

Can you tell your fascia from your flashing? On this roofing course, you’ll learn how to use plain and interlocking tiles, cement fibre slates and other materials to cover valleys, hips and general areas.


  • The apprenticeship covers the practical techniques and theoretical knowledge you need to achieve the roof slating and tiling framework.

Two years (total training: 22 weeks at college over the two year period)


You’ll spend periods between college training on site with your employer, developing work-based skills and knowledge.

Course Programme


The Roof Slating and Tiling apprenticeship includes practical training in:

  1. Mobile towers
  2. Fire fighting
  3. Safe use of ladders
  4. Manual handling
  5. Carrying out safe working practices in construction
  6. Information, quantities and communicating with others
  7. Building methods and construction technology
  8. Installing single-lap roof coverings to a variable gauge
  9. Installing plain tile roof coverings
  10. Installing regular-sized natural roof slates to standard details
  11. Stripping and reclaiming pitched roof coverings
  12. Installing roofing backgrounds and components
  13. Installing pre-formed weathering flashings to roofs.


You’ll also achieve competence in:

  1. Mathematics
  2. English
  3. Communication
  4. Employment responsibilities and rights
  5. Health and safety
  6. Drug and alcohol awareness.

Entry requirements


No formal requirements, but it’s useful to have GCSEs (grade A*-C) in English and maths.

  • You will have to complete a Skills Learning exercise and may have to attend the college for further tests.
  • Good numeracy skills are important as the job involves calculating areas and quantities of materials • You’ll need an aptitude for reading and interpreting plans, instructions and drawings.

Assessment and exams

A combination of classroom-based theory and workshop-based practicals, individual tutorials and progress reviews. Assessment will take place via:

  • Written and practical assessments (mapped to Diploma and NVQ Diploma competence levels)
  • A site visit
  • A synoptic practical challenge
  • An assessment
  • The GOLA on-line mulitiple-choice assessment test.  

On completion of the Roof Slating and Tiling apprenticeship, you’ll have these qualifications/certification:


  • 3 Level 2 NVQ Construction Diploma in Roof Slating and Tiling
  • 3 Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Roofing Operations
  • 3 Level 1 Functional Skills
  • 3 Employment Responsibilities and Rights
  • 3 Personal Learning and Thinking Skills.


  • You may also gain value-added qualifications in first aid and health and safety, along with other industry-specific subjects.
