The construction industry is made up of a wide range of activities and occupations. Over 50 specialist occupations exist within the industry, with some sectors being populated by thousands of companies whilst others only support a handful of firms.
The industry definition of a `specialist` is open to interpretation. Activities, such as plastering or carpentry are carried out in every building but these professions are still considered specialist.
Specialist training needs are no different to those of the mainstream occupations. The main difference is that many specialist sectors tend to employ adults rather than apprentices. This also means that their training needs cannot always be fulfilled by FE Colleges and training providers.
As a result, some of the smaller specialist sectors have been unable to attract younger people. With no apprentices and no established training programmes, these sectors are simply running out of qualified workers.
In response, we have established a specific 'National Specialists' team to support and fulfil the needs of specialist contractors, ensuring that they are able to gain value for money from CITB-ConstructionSkills for paying a levy.
The role carried out by the National Specialists covers a range of criteria.
