Mechanical jointing and finishing

Duration

Minimum 3 days of 6 learning hours per day.

Purpose/ scope

Purpose:

Jointing materials produce durable joint reinforcement and a smooth, continuous, surface ready for priming and final decoration This standard is designed to develop practical application of mechanical jointing to tapered edge joints, butt end joints, internal and external angles on plasterboard surfaces.

Scope:

• jointing products; which products can and cannot be used in the mechanical jointing tools
• mixing powder joint cement
• applying external angles by hand. using beads and corner tapes
• prime the pump, filling the auto taper, applying tapes.
• the boxing process for flat surfaces and butt ends.
• basic maintenance and repairs of the mechanical taping equipment
• joint reinforcement to flat surface joints, internal angles, beads and corner tapes for external, obtuse internal angles
• combining 1st stage hand jointing with joint finishing with mechanical jointing box applications
• sanding methods
• drywall primer and sealer applications on sanded board surfaces
• repair of damaged plasterboard surfaces
• tools for the jointing process

Candidate pre-requisites

There are no candidate pre-requisites as part of this standard. However a basic knowledge of interior systems terminology and techniques would be beneficial.

Instruction/ supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

• a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
• successfully completed training to this standard
• at least 2 years relevant industrial experience
• a verifiable CV

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The following delivery methods may/may not be used in the delivery of this standard:

• workshop
• classroom.

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more practical training.

This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

Either on request or in 3 years from approval date.

Learning outcomes

The candidate will be able to:

• Use jointing products and identify which products can be used in the mechanical process.
• Mix powder joint cement.
• Combine 1st stage hand jointing with joint finishing with mechanical jointing box applications.
• Apply external angles by hand.
• Use beads and tapes. 
• Prime the pump, fill the auto taper and apply tapes.
• Apply the boxing process.
• Maintain and repair the mechanical taping equipment.
• Use hand and mechanical sanding methods.
• Apply Drywall primer and sealer applications on sanded board surfaces.
• Repair damaged plasterboard surfaces.
• Apply tapes to flat surfaces and internal angles with the automatic taping machine.
• Identify tools for the jointing process.
