Overview

The purpose of this standard is to provide an introduction to the basic design process and basic design specification of metal roofing systems.

Duration

Minimum 1 day of 6 learning hours.

Purpose/ scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide an introduction to the basic design process and basic design specification of metal roofing systems.

The scope of this standard covers:

  • Metal roofing systems such as: single sheet, twin sheet, composite, insulated, twin skin, profiled, standing seam, and batten.
  • How to read manufacturers’ design drawings
  • Main steps for designing a metal roofing system (contract and legislative)
  • Performance factors to consider when designing a metal roofing system
  • Main parts of a metal roofing system
  • Types of attachment for a metal roofing system (vents, fall arrestors, skylights)
  • Advantages and disadvantages of metal roofing systems, compared with non- metal roofing systems
  • How to fix metal roofing sheets to a building structure
  • How to join metal roofing sheets to each other
  • Main legislation, codes of practice, and/or standards that apply to roofing design, including safety. 

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard is relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • Operative and craft
  • Technical 
  • Supervision
  • Management and leadership.

Candidate pre-requisites

There are no candidate pre-requisites as part of this standard. However, a basic knowledge of roofing terminology and techniques would be beneficial.

Instruction/supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • A train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • Successfully completed training to this standard
  • At least 2 years relevant industrial experience
  • A verifiable CV.

Delivery

The following methods may be used in the delivery of this standard: classroom, elearning, or a blend.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.

Learning should include at least 20% of learning activities for candidates to design and specify roofing for sample building scenarios.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, the trainer will be required to make a declaration of the learner’s contribution during the course and that they are confident the learner has understood the content of the course.

Quality assurance

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

The candidate will be able to:

  • Read manufacturers’ design drawings.
  • List the main steps for designing a metal roof system (contract and legislative).
  • List the performance factors to consider when designing a metal roof system.
  • Describe the main parts of a metal roofing system, using simple drawings with text descriptions.
  • List the types of attachment for a metal roofing system.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of metal roofing systems, compared with non-metal roofing systems.
  • Describe how to fix metal roofing sheets to a building structure.
  • Describe how join metal roofing sheets to each other.
  • List the main legislation, codes of practice, and/or standards that apply to roofing design, including safety.
