The sky's the limit when you train up

Sky Scaffolding (Whitby) wanted to keep up with advances in scaffolding technology and needed to upskill their workforce – not only to meet rising demand, but to maximise capacity.

The Plettac system is regarded as one the most versatile and efficient scaffolding systems currently used in construction. Its innovative design allows endless adaptability for different needs and buildings, and enables the safe erection of extensive structures with great speed – reducing costs and boosting productivity.

Meeting the demand

Amanda Coates, Managing Director of Sky Scaffolding (Whitby) found that an increasing number of developers and contractors wanted to use Plettac, particularly for new builds, but she only had one employee qualified to work with it.

The solution was clear – train up the team.

“We decided to upskill six of our employees over six months to ensure that they had the professional skills and qualifications to work with the Plettac system,” she explains.“The plan was that they would take a Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme (CISRS) Part 1 qualification in that system.

“Our fantastic contact from CITB told us what funding was available to us for the training and how to apply for it. With her help the application was straightforward, and we quickly received £4,300 in funding.”

Company:  Sky Scaffolding (Whitby)
Sector:  Commercial, industrial and domestic scaffolding services
Challenge:  Creating a team of scaffolders qualified in the Plettac system
Fund type: CITB’s skills and training fund
Amount awarded: £4,300
Impact:  A more skilled and better qualified workforce able to take on a wider range of jobs.

“If only fixing the course dates was as easy. Problems with arranging the course meant we had to delay the end date. So we finally opted for our employees to do CISRS Scaffolding Parts 1 and 2, followed by a short Plettac crossover course.”

As a result of the training, the business has increased its capacity. Skills have improved and clients recognise the company’s professionalism and desire to meet their needs.

"With this funding I can upskill more employees. I wouldn’t have been able to have offered training to as many of my team without CITB’s help.”

The value of training

“Before this, we’d never applied for funding. But now we know what to do, we intend to apply every year,” Amanda says.“Everyone here enjoys getting training. We really appreciate it and it benefits the company as much as the employees. Everybody’s happy.”

“I’ve always believed in training our workforce, but it’s an expensive business. With this funding I can upskill more employees. I wouldn’t have been able to have offered training to as many of my team without CITB’s help. It’s brilliant!”

“We now have more scaffolding gangs, so we can take on more work. The opportunity to train has given our employees better qualifications, better money and better prospects.”
