This qualification is graded using a Pass, Merit and Distinction format and has been included in the Department for Education performance tables.

The Level 3 Diploma in Bench Joinery qualification has been developed for delivery in a training environment; this means that you do not need to be employed to study this qualification. It has been designed to develop your skills, knowledge and understanding so you can work in Bench Joinery in the construction industry or progress to further training.

This qualification supports the Learner to attain enabling, fundamental and transferable practical skills with associated underpinning knowledge. Although part of an apprenticeship, this qualification is available outside of an apprenticeship where either the learner’s circumstances prevent them undertaking a full apprenticeship or where their prior skills and knowledge mean they do not require all components of the apprenticeship. In addition, industry will accept the qualification on its own as entry to a job role.

The learner will cover knowledge in three core subject areas:
- Health, safety and welfare
- Technical information, quantities and communication
- Construction industry and built environment

The Learner will also learn key practical skills and knowledge in:
- Set up and operate woodworking machinery to create curved work
- Manufacture shaped joinery products
- Set and mark out for shaped joinery products

This NVQ qualification requests the learner to demonstrate, in a real workplace environment, that you are competent against a set of performance statements. You are assessed by an occupationally competent and qualified assessor whose job is to work with you and help you through your programme of learning.

The following section (employer Involvement) is applicable to qualifications that have been entered into the Department for Education (DfE) performance tables. The purpose of the performance tables is to equip a learner with specialist knowledge and skills, enabling entry into employment or to progress in Bench Joinery within the construction industry.

As this qualification has been entered into the DfE performance tables centre must adhere to a number of characteristics in order to warrant inclusion.

These characteristics are covered under the heading of Appropriate Content, Appropriate Assessment, Grading, Synoptic Assessment and Employer Engagement and are contained within the full qualification specification.

DfE only approves qualifications for recognition in school and college performance tables that support progression to learning at the next level or skilled employment. DfE identifies these qualifications by reviewing qualifications nominated by awarding organisations against the characteristic requirements. The following information outlines these characteristics.

Employer involvement:
Cskills Awards require all learners on this qualification to be exposed to an element of employer engagement to help with the knowledge and understanding of the learners chosen trade. This will be achieved by providing, centres, training providers and colleges with a choice of employer enrichment activities to add to the delivery of the qualification to enhance the learner journey. The choices include:
- Learners undertake structured work-experience or work-placements that develop skills and knowledge relevant to the qualification;
- Learners undertake project(s), exercises(s) and/or assessments/examination(s) set with input from industry practitioner(s);
- Learners take one or more units delivered or co-delivered by an industry practitioner(s). This could take the form of master classes or guest lectures;

This activity is mandatory* and in all cases participating industry practitioners and employers must be relevant to the industry sector or occupation/occupational group to which the qualification relates.
