With the regulations affecting demolition in flux, the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC) wanted to make it easier for Demolition Managers to renew their Certificate of Competence of Demolition Operatives (CCDO) card.
“There’s constantly changing legislation in the demolition industry, so it’s important that guys at this level stay up to date,” says Howard Button, NFDC CEO.
“The course updates them on new legislation like Construction Design and Management regulation and waste regulation and lets them renew their card,” says Howard. “We’ve had excellent feedback and there’s always something new they learn.”
Anyone who attends the Federation’s popular Demolition Manager’s course automatically qualifies to take the refresher, which was delivered 105 times between August 2017 and August 2018.
“One of the key parts of the course is to stress their responsibilities as managers,” Howard says. “We tell them you’re here to ensure you’re delivering the proper message for your company. You’re the eyes and ears of your company and you’re in control of the team.”
Participants receive relevant CITB publications, a course booklet and guidance notes. On completion of the one-day course, they are awarded with a full Certificate of Competence of Demolition Operatives (CCDO), allowing them to renew their cards.
Howard says that without funding from CITB, the Federation would have struggled to deliver something worthwhile. “Funding support from CITB has enabled us to produce a course that’s fit for purpose. CITB has always been the number one place for training in the industry. With their support, we’re becoming the number one place for demolition training.”
There have been positive knock-on effects too. Firstly, take-up of the course has boosted NFDC membership (“once they see the value of it, they get ‘converted,’” Howard says), which includes training in its membership criteria.
And secondly, it has had an important impact on the demolition industry beyond card renewal and keeping legal knowledge current. NFDC has found that the course has also created a forum for peers to share information and demolition best practice.
“We don’t want companies to feel certain issues have only happened to them,” Howard says. “We don’t allow more than two participants from a single company because we want to get a discussion going. It’s our job to bring people together and improve safety standards.
“Demolition Managers like to share their experiences. They like to see what’s going on in the industry. One of the best parts is the interaction between course attendees,”
And since launch, CITB has enabled any employer who takes the Demolition Manager refresher course to become eligible for a CITB grant, making it accessible to an even wider range of professionals.
