A desire to develop staff skills and promote construction in the community was at the heart of R. Walker and Sons (Preston) Ltd’s CITB funding application.
Formed in 1896, R. Walker has a proud tradition of training staff, apprentices and working with supply chain partners.
However, to maintain tradition and continue their staff and training commitments the business, which also manufactures PVCu windows and doors, had to develop certain aspects of their work.
To support this aim, the firm applied for £5,000 via CITB’s Flexible Fund Skills and Training.
Funding, which commenced in July 2016, will help the business:
- Produce better bids and win work.
- Improve internal and external communications.
- Deliver sustainable projects through carbon management.
- Increase understanding of the construction industry’s Building Information Model (BIM).
“Applying for funding was dead easy and straightforward,” says R. Walker and Sons’ Office Manager, Julie Kinsey.
“My queries were answered promptly and in plain English, everything was explained in detail. Funding staff were helpful and understood our business requirements.”
R. Walker and Sons have run an apprenticeship training scheme employing young people on training schemes for the last 50 years. Their work aims to ensure apprentices receive detailed and varied training both in house and at college.
“Our CITB-funded programme will help deliver the skills to enable us to maintain our culture of improvement and collaboration,” says Julie.
