Training can have a positive ripple effect in an organisation, just ask Aaron Doonan, Managing Director of Torquay-based Skippy Construction.
“I heard about CITB funding through South Devon College,” says Aaron, who has employed apprentices from the college in his general building business.
“One of the college’s staff said CITB offer skills and training funding so I thought I’d apply.”
Aaron, who established his business ten years ago, sought funding so two of his bricklayers could gain formal qualifications.
“I’ve got three brickwork apprentices who are supervised by two experienced brickies,” explains Aaron.
“However, because my experienced staff have no formal qualifications, they don’t feel fully qualified to guide the young apprentices. By having NVQ training on-site, they can brush-up on their skills and gain confidence.”
In addition to upskilling his bricklayers, Aaron sought CITB funding to undertake “Streetworks” training.
“The Streetworks course means three members of staff can work on the highways. Lots of local authorities won’t let you work without the Streetworks qualification so it’s essential to my work.”

Aaron, who received £5,000 from CITB to train his staff, says applying for funding was a smooth process. It’s even inspired him to consider a new application when the current funding ends.
“Applying for funding was straightforward,” he says. “The college helped me with the paperwork and it didn’t take long to get the funding, just four weeks.”
“Training’s been good for staff morale. A couple of guys said they would like training to help their work so I may apply for more funding in a year or two. Training has created good interest among staff.”
