We pay grants for attending and achieving approved, higher level qualifications that are focused on the core construction skills needed across the industry. We support courses undertaken through distance learning and e-learning. Higher level qualifications include:
These grants for long-period qualifications do not support apprenticeships. See Apprenticeship grants for details of available support.
These grants are available to support directly employed staff on the payroll and all sub-contractors.
As well as fulfilling our general Grants Scheme terms and conditions, you must be able to offer the appropriate level of work experience to the trainee, who should spend a minimum of 16 hours per week doing the job they are developing skills in. The pattern of working may be averaged over a four-week rolling period.
If we’re not satisfied that you’re providing adequate training, we may reduce, withhold or reclaim the grant.
You must also tell us immediately if your trainee leaves their training programme or employment. Failure to do so will result in action to recover overpayments.
If you do not see a qualification in the current list of those eligible for grant, you can complete an online form to suggest it for consideration.
This depends on how long the training lasts. The attendance grant rate for the current year is £1,125.
Grant is available for a maximum of six years attendance.
You can apply for a £1,875 achievement grant on successful completion of the qualification.
You may also apply for grants for any short course which is not included within the long-period qualification, but that is necessary and appropriate. You must cover the cost of this training, and you may not apply for any other type of grant for the individual.
You should apply for the attendance grant when your learner starts the course, and the achievement grant when he or she has completed the course and achieved the necessary qualification.
If your learner is starting a new long period qualification between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2021, you should submit an application form within 20 weeks of the course start date.
If your learner is starting a new long period qualification between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022, you should submit an application form within 20 weeks of the course start date.

You must provide supporting evidence from your training provider with your application. The evidence must show:
The supporting evidence must be on headed paper from the training provider or in an email from the training provider (from an email address ending .ac.uk)

As long as we receive the correct paperwork within 20 weeks of the start of the academic year, we'll begin making your grant payments, backdated to this start date.
Every 13 weeks we will ask you to confirm that the individual is still in training and employment, which you should do within 3 months to continue to receive payments.
If your trainee leaves your employment but has not achieved, we will pay attendance grant up to the date your trainee left.
If a trainee moves from one employer to another during the course of the qualification, you will only be paid attendance grant for the period the trainee was employed by your company.
If you don't submit your paperwork within 20 weeks of the start date of the course, we won't backdate payments to the start date of the course. We only make attendance grant payments backdated to the date on which we receive your paperwork.
For achievements gained between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2021, you should submit an application form with a copy of your achievement certificate or an achievement notification email from the awarding body by 30 June 2021.
For achievements gained between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022, you should submit an application form with a copy of your achievement certificate or an achievement notification email from the awarding body by 30 June 2022.
On completion of your trainee achievement, we will pay attendance grant up to the date your trainee’s last date of learning.
If the trainee transfers but remains in the same trade or occupation, grant payments remain available and are shared between employers according to the number of days of employment the trainee has had with each.
You can apply for a grant for a trainee who moves on to a higher level within a trade or does a second long-period qualification in a different occupational area. You can do this for up to two long-period qualifications per level per individual.
Grants are paid by bank transfer. If we do not hold your current bank details, please complete and submit the secure online Bacs Direct Credit Authorisation Form to receive grant payments
