Levy assessment and how to appeal

As a CITB-registered employer, every year you will receive a Levy Assessment Notice from us. Your assessment tells you how much levy you need to pay and when you need to pay it. It is based on the figures you provide on your Levy Return.

You will usually receive your Levy Assessment Notice in March or April after you submit your return.

Estimated levy assessment

If we haven't received your Levy Return before we raise the levy assessments, we’ll send you an estimated assessment. 

The estimate can sometimes be higher than the amount you should be paying.

However, you can still complete the Levy Return once you receive the estimate so we can calculate your correct rate – you should wait until you receive your correct assessment before paying the levy.

How to appeal if you think your levy assessment is wrong

You can query your levy assessment directly with CITB. There is no cost for doing this. Please write, explaining your concerns, to The Appeals Section, CITB, Bircham Newton, King’s Lynn, Norfolk, PE31 6RH, or by email at appeals.section@citb.co.uk

If you are not happy with our response, you can appeal to an employment tribunal. You have one month to do so from the date that you receive your Levy Assessment Notice.

If you want to appeal to an employment tribunal straight away, you need to contact your local employment tribunal office. You do not have to pay a fee to make a claim to the Employment Tribunal.

If you query or appeal against your Levy Assessment Notice, you do not need to pay your levy until you know the outcome.
