Leicestershire stonemason named CITB Apprentice of the Year

A Market Harborough apprentice stonemason has won top prize at the 2017 Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Apprenticeship Awards.

Theo Brogan, 22, employed by Uppingham Stone Ltd. was named Great Britain Apprentice of the Year and England Apprentice of the Year at the ceremony which took place at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London (9th November).

The CITB Apprentice Awards celebrate the achievements of CITB apprentices, and their employers. The winners were presented with their awards at a ceremony hosted by BBC News presenter, Steph McGovern.

An initial interest and aptitude for art and sculpture led Theo to stonemasonry where he has excelled ever since.  Theo uses both machines and hand tools to produce beautiful pieces of work from his own and others’ designs.  He has worked on numerous buildings of historical importance – restoring and recreating period features.  Theo is an absolute craftsman, producing exquisite pieces of work for clients and regarded extremely highly by his peers and colleagues.  He gives his own time freely to develop both himself and others, being an active Construction Ambassador promoting the industry to others.

Theo Brogan said: “Wow, I’m delighted. I wasn’t expecting to win so I’m a bit in shock. Being nominated was great, but this is brilliant!  I’ve learned so much in my apprenticeship and it’s been great. I’d encourage anyone thinking about starting an apprenticeship to give it a go. I would like to thank everyone at CITB and at Uppingham Stone Ltd for all they have done for me.”

Sarah Beale, Chief Executive of CITB said: “Huge congratulations to Theo - who I had the pleasure of meeting - on his win! He is a great example of an apprentice who is really developing their skills fit for a modern construction industry, and we are proud to support them. The industry needs more talented people joining so that they can help meet industry’s skills needs and build a better Britain. There are fantastic opportunities in the sector and apprentices like Theo will be first in line, ready to take full advantage.”

CITB is the largest provider of construction apprenticeships in the UK, giving 15,000 young people every year the opportunity to enter the construction industry, whilst helping employers to grow their businesses.
