Overview
Duration
Minimum 3 days of 6 learning hours per day
Purpose/scope
The purpose of this standard is to provide delegates with the relevant skills and knowledge to supervise the removal of asbestos safely, by minimising exposure to asbestos. It is essential for recently trained employees, particularly those new to asbestos supervision work, to consolidate their newly acquired skills and knowledge by putting them to use on the job. Managers will play an important role in coaching these members of staff. Training on its own does not make people working with asbestos competent. Training must be consolidated so that the person becomes confident, skilful, and knowledgeable in practice on the job.

- directing, monitoring and supervising all aspects of work on site
- supervising key stages of work
- producing and managing plans of work
- notifying the appropriate enforcing authorities
- changes in circumstances
- emergency procedures
- monitoring and auditing of work activities
- communicating with and monitoring workers in the enclosure and hygiene unit
- providing additional training, information and instruction
- assessing competence
- air monitoring
- keeping and maintaining results and records
- the procedures for dealing with accidents, incidents and emergencies
- importance of keeping the work area clean
- laboratory analyst requirements
- procedures required to allow the issue of the certificate of reoccupation

Delegates pre-requisites
Delegates must have previously completed training in accordance with paragraphs 251 and 253 of ‘Managing and working with asbestos – Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 Approved Code of Practice and guidance’
Instruction/ supervision
As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:
- an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
- successfully completed training to this standard
- at least 3 years relevant industrial experience
- a verifiable CV
Delivery
Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.
All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.
The class size and delegate/trainer ratio must not be more than 12:1 to allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.
The following delivery method should be used in the delivery of this standard:
- classroom
- a blend of classroom and remote
This standard is considered to contain 51% or more theoretical learning.
This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.
Assessment
For the successful completion of training, delegates must complete an end of course assessment or knowledge test that measures all learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.
Where this training is assessed using multiple-choice questions, a minimum of 40 questions must be asked and delegates are required to achieve an overall pass mark of at least 80%.
Quality assurance
Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.
CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.
Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.
Renewal
Refresher training for licensable work should be given every year, or more frequently if:
- work methods change
- the type of equipment used to control exposure changes
- the type of work carried out changes significantly
- gaps in competency are identified
