Purpose/ scope
The purpose of this standard is to provide the candidate with practical knowledge and skills required to maintain and safely use hand and power tools.

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

Candidate pre-requisites
There are no candidate pre-requisites as part of this standard. However a basic knowledge of interior systems terminology and techniques would be beneficial.
Instruction/ supervision
As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:
- a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
- successfully completed training to this standard
- at least 2 years relevant industrial experience
- a verifiable CV
Delivery
Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.
All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.
The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.
The following delivery methods may/may not be used in the delivery of this standard:
- practical training in an on or off the job environment.
This standard is considered to contain 51% or more theoretical training.
This standard is considered to be set at an entry level.
Assessment
For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.
Quality assurance
Assured
Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.
CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.
Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.
Renewal
No Renewal/Refreshment Requirements - There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

Learning outcomes
The candidate will be able to:
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of instructions, drawings and technical literature.
- Demonstrate the correct use of hand tools, materials and PPE.
- Taking appropriate corrective action.
- Work as part of a team under instruction.
- Demonstrate safe and clean working practices within the workplace.
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of instructions to select resources for the maintenance of hand tools.
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of instructions and safe working practices when using hand tools, in your own occupation.
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of instructions and safe working practices for operating power tools.
- Confirm understanding and follow instructions on selecting resources
- Inform the person in charge of problems in selecting resources.
- Use hand tools for cutting and shaping materials to size, drilling and inserting screws/fastenings.
- Use portable power tools for ripping, crosscutting, mitre and compound bevel cuts, cutting curves, planning, rebating, grooving and moulding, drilling and boring, inserting screws, finishing.
- Carry out the setting up and change of tooling for portable power tools.
- Carry out the setting up, change of tool and maintenance for hand tools.
- Protect the work and secure tools and equipment.
- Follow organisational requirements for current legislation and official guidance.
- Follow instructions for maintaining a clean workplace.
- Follow instructions for hazard identification and take corrective action within the limits of own authority and on organisational procedures in cases of fire, accident, equipment failure.
- Understand the use of personal protective equipment.
- Maintain personal cleanliness and organisational policy on personal behaviour.
