Overview

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to be able to efficiently and effectively monitor and control the work and movement of mechanical excavators on a work site in accordance with company procedures.

Minimum 1 day of 6 learning hours 

Purpose/scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to be able to efficiently and effectively monitor and control the work and movement of mechanical excavators on a work site in accordance with company procedures. 

Demonstrating a safety conscious approach to the control of hazards associated with the activity whilst working and communicating effectively with others to maintain a safe working environment on site. 

The scope this standard covers the following: 

  • Roles and responsibilities e.g. safe working practices and safety legislation (e.g. HSG47) 
  • Plan and prepare resources to direct plant 
  • Equipment information e.g. PPE 
  • Direct movement of vehicles safely 
  • Position and demarcate plant on site 
  • Monitor & control excavations.

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group: 

  • Operative
  • Supervision.

Delegate pre-requisites

There are no delegate pre-requisites as part of this standard. 

Instruction/supervision

 As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have: 

  • An award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)  
  • Successfully completed training to this standard  
  • At least 2 years relevant industrial experience 
  • A verifiable CV.

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment. 

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes, and must comply with relevant legislation. 

The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.  

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard: 

  • Classroom 
  • Practical.  

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more practical training. 

This standard is considered to be set at a basic level. 

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria 

Quality assurance

Recognised 

Approved Training Organisation’s will be required to supply confirmation of approval (centre approval and scheme approval) with the related third party awarding organisation or body. In most cases this will be an approval certificate provided by the third party awarding organisation or body, listing the routes, qualifications and categories they are approved to deliver. In addition, a copy of the most recent external quality assurance monitoring report will be required, relating to the standard that you wish to be approved for.  

This information will be reviewed by CITB’s quality assurance team. Approval will be subject to the required third party documentation being supplied by you. As part of the quality assurance checks, CITB may confirm the accuracy of documentation with the issuing organisation.

Explain the importance of standing in a safe position in full view of the machine operator but also in full view of the excavation  

Emphasise the importance of the machine operator isolating the machine to prevent any movement when the excavation marshall – banksperson is checking the excavation 

Identify the different types of overhead and underground services 

How to identify and consider the type and proximity of overhead and underground services 

Identify responsibilities as an Excavation Marshall- Banksperson to ensure the safety of those working in the operational environment as well as themselves 

Determine the location using company documentation and working instructions 

Plan the work activity to comply with health, safety and environmental legislation. 

Carry out a site-specific risk assessment 

Identify the required control measures to maintain a safe working environment 

Identify the risks of excavating near to underground services, and the safe digging practices that should be adopted 

Monitor and maintain the position and condition of services to ensure working practices within the work area avoid damage or disturbance
