The purpose of this standard is to provide an introduction to the basic design process and basic design specification of metal cladding systems.
The scope of this standard covers:
- Metal roofing systems such as: single sheet, twin sheet, composite, insulated, twin skin, profiled, standing seam, and batten.
- How to read manufacturers’ design drawings
- Main steps for designing a metal cladding system (contract and legislative)
- Performance factors to consider when designing a metal cladding system
- Main parts of a metal cladding system
- Advantages and disadvantages of metal cladding, compared with non-metal cladding
- How to fix metal cladding to a building structure
- How to join metal cladding sheets to each other
- Main legislation, codes of practice, and/or standards that apply to cladding design, including safety.
Training delivered against this standard is relevant to the following occupational group(s):
- Operative and craft
- Management and leadership.
There are no candidate pre-requisites as part of this standard.
As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:
- A train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
- Successfully completed training to this standard
- At least 2 years relevant industrial experience
- A verifiable CV.
The following methods may be used in the delivery of this standard: classroom, elearning, or a blend.
All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.
The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.
Learning should include at least 20% of learning activities for candidates to design and specify cladding for sample building scenarios.
For the successful completion of training, the trainer will be required to make a declaration of the learner’s contribution during the course and that they are confident the learner has understood the content of the course.
Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.
CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.
Approved training organisations will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.
There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

- List the main steps for designing a metal cladding system (contract and legislative).
- List the performance factors to consider when designing metal cladding.
- Describe the main parts of a metal cladding system, using simple drawings with text descriptions.
- Describe the advantages and disadvantages of metal cladding systems, compared with non- metal cladding systems.
- Describe the methods for fixing metal cladding to a building.
- Describe the methods for joining metal cladding sheets to each other.
- List the main legislation, codes of practice, and/or standards that apply to metal cladding design, including safety.
