If you are undertaking gas work, gas safety legislation requires that you must be competent. Whether you are an experienced gas fitter, have experience or qualifications in a similar job discipline, or have no experience at all, this scheme is for you. The Intermediate Gas Certificate is specifically designed to provide you with the opportunity to gain knowledge, practical skills and guidance.
We offer a popular range of gas courses based on the Health and Safety Commission’s Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) standards of training in safe gas installations.
The gas training scheme covers:
- Domestic natural gas safety
- Commercial catering
- Boiling burners
- Gas fires
- Water boilers
- Instantaneous water heaters
- Deep fat fryers
- Central heating boilers
- Commercial gas safety
- Ducted air heaters
- Pipe installation
- Commercial test and purge
- Radiant heating
- Indirect fired heating
- Direct fired heating
- LPG safety permanent dwellings/residential park homes
- LPG vessel/pipework
- LPG caravans/appliances
- LPG boats/appliances
Course attendees are categorised depending on experience. There are three categories:
You are an experienced gas fitter. If you have existing gas knowledge, experience and qualifications, training is not a pre-requisite to assessment. You can apply direct for assessment or alternatively attend a refresher training course prior to assessment.
You hold a nationally recognised qualification, e.g. an NVQ/SVQ or City & Guilds Craft certificate in a trade associated with gas work, such as plumbing.
You are new to the gas industry and entering employment for the first time or changing career direction.

Recent changes to the Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) operational requirements require category 2 and 3 operatives/trainees entering ACS assessment to have proof of both ‘on the-job’ and ‘off the job’ training and on-site experience in the form of a managed learning programme. The Intermediate Gas Certificate (IGC) satisfies this requirement.
As a result of this, some approved centres now offer courses for individuals with experience in other disciplines leading to the Intermediate Gas Certificate. These courses have been developed to provide you with the opportunity to gain knowledge, practical skills and guidance. They also contain a framework for collecting evidence of on-site training and experience. The Intermediate Gas Certificate does not replace an SVQ/NVQ, but has been designed to meet the essential gas safety training and experience requirements of an SVQ/NVQ. It also satisfies the alternative industry entry requirements, as detailed in the ACS operational requirements.
Completion of the appropriate course workbooks and practical tasks will lead you through the practical and knowledge and understanding tasks needed to apply for ACS assessment, within category 2, and enable you to enter for an ACS assessment.
