What is a Grace Period?

A Grace Period, is a period of time (normally 12months) from the time the CPCS Trained Operator (Red) card expires, to when the individual either applies for a 12 month extension, or move towards a Competent Operator (Blue) card.

For example: Today is 12 Feb 2015, your Trained Operator card for A04 Tower Crane expired on 1 Jan 2015. If you're not yet SVQ or NVQ registered, you have until 31 Dec 2015 to register for the VQ and apply for 12 month extension.

What is a banked category?

As long as at least one category on a card is renewed, categories not applied for at the time of renewal may be ‘banked’ and claimed at a later date (but this must be within the five-year  lifespan of the renewed Competent Operator card) providing the requirements as set out in the Scheme Booklet for Operators are met.

How do I reinstate a Banked Category?

An operator is required to carry out the following (within the five-year lifespan of the card).

Demonstrate on-going practical operating experience through a choice of routes:

  • Logbook
  • On-Site Assessment
  • CPCS Practical Test
  • SVQ or NVQ

You will need to complete CPCS Application form F1/3. This will be sent to you as part of your renewal reminder, or can be downloaded.

Where SVQ or NVQ units relevant to a category being renewed have been achieved within the previous two years of the renewal date, the logbook or On-Site Assessment does not need to be undertaken in order to renew that category.

In this instance, the NVQ and SVQ groupings does not apply. Please note that for this concession, the grouping of categories for NVQ and SVQ purposes does not apply.

CPCS Application form F1/3 will need to have an independent declaration by a CPCS company-approved Validator.

A £25 card application fee should be attached to the application. This is a non-refundable fee for the service of processing the application.

Can I use SVQ or NVQ units to renew my Competent Operator Card?

Where SVQ or NVQ units relevant to a category being renewed have been achieved within the previous two years of the renewal date, the logbook or On-Site Assessment does not need to be undertaken in order to renew that category.

In this instance, the NVQ and SVQ groupings does not apply. Please note that for this concession, the grouping of categories for NVQ and SVQ purposes does not apply.

What happens if my Trained Operator (Red) card has expired by more than 12months?

There are two routes available - Option 2 and Option 3, see Section C1 and Appendix I of the Scheme Booklet for Operators.

How can I add more categories and/or endorsements to my Trained Operator (Red) card?

Adding new categories, you are required to (in this order):

  • Pass the relevant CITB Health, safety and environment test
  • Achieve the CPCS Theory Test (within two years of the CITB Health, safety and environment test)
  • Achieve the CPCS Practical Test (within six months of the CPCS Theory Test and within two years of the CITB Health, safety and environment test)

Adding further endorsements to existing categories, you are required to:

  • Pass the relevant CITB Health, safety and environment test
  • Achieve the CPCS Practical Test (within two years of the CITB Health, safety and environment test)
