How to identify and follow the manufacturer’s instructions
How to establish suitability of existing substrates and ensure use of specified fixing regimes
The importance of checking vertical and horizontal datum
How to accommodate and integrate mechanical and electrical services within different ceiling systems
How to set out, install and repair the following types of complex ceilings:
curved ceilings
sloping ceilings
floating ceilings including canopies
complex ceiling voids such as corridors where you can’t suspend from the soffit
plasterboard margins and upstands
transition and style trims
acoustic ceilings including acoustic hangers and various forms of insulation and acoustic pads
Why it is important to carry out any repairs and how to do this in accordance with suppliers’ and manufacturers recommendations, best practice guidelines, to required standards and competencies
How to install fire, smoke, sound and thermal cavity barriers
How to prepare the ceiling for ceiling mounted and recessed service installations
The different fixing and hanger systems and why the types and centres differ across systems and loading
Whether there is a need for a sub grid and how it should be installed
How to identify the appropriate use of pattresses, loading specifications and limitations of the ceiling systems
How any problems with the methods of work and building conditions should be reported including those that are within your authority to rectify
How to recognise and follow instructions for specific requirements in structures of special interest, traditional construction, hard-to-treat buildings and historical significance
How to work with, around and in close proximity to plant and machinery
How to work at height using access equipment including recognising the correct certification for the access equipment
How to use all relevant hand and power tools and equipment
How and why operative care and maintenance of all relevant hand and power tools and equipment is carried out
The importance of teamwork and communication
The needs of other trades associated with installing suspended ceiling systems
How the resources should be used and how any problems associated with the resources are reported in relation to:
tiles
grid components
hangers
battens
braces
pattresses
insulation
panels
sealants
fittings and fixings
hand and power tools and equipment
digital equipment
