Liverpool Mayor signs partnership with CITB to train thousands of construction workers

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram and CITB CEO Tim Balcon today signed a first-of-its-kind training agreement to tackle an estimated shortfall of 9,000 building workers in the region. The landmark collaboration between the Combined Authority (CA) and the CITB marks a major step forward in ensuring the region has the skilled workforce needed to deliver ambitious housing, retrofit and infrastructure projects.

Registrations open for SkillBuild 2026

The registrations for SkillBuild, the UK’s largest and longest-running multi-trade skills competition, delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), are now open. CITB’s specialist New Entrant Support Team helps over 1,500 apprentices join the industry in six months

The number of apprenticeship starts supported has increased by 61% compared to previous period The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) has today released its mid-year figures for its New Entrant Support Team (NEST). The figures show that NEST has already supported 1,521 apprenticeship starts between April – September 2025, an increase from 943 in the same period in the previous year.

Construction and Engineering Week 2025 gets into full swing

One of the largest ever skills events kicked off yesterday (23 September) at Lincolnshire Showground. Over three days (Tuesday 23 to Thursday 25 September) more than 1,500 school children, aged between 10 and 18 years, will get a hands-on introduction to vital trades such as carpentry, bricklaying, block paving, electrical and mechanical engineering, as well as virtual reality welding.
