Health and Safety Awareness (HSA)

Learn essential health and safety knowledge for construction in your own time, from the comfort of your own home. This flexible online course helps you identify workplace hazards, stay safe on site and gain a recognised qualification that can support your application for a CSCS Labourer Card.

Who is it for?

Recommended if you:

  • Live and work in the UK construction industry

  • Want to refresh your basic health and safety knowledge

  • Want to gain a recognised health and safety qualification

  • Want to support your application for a CSCS Labourer Card.*

*You will also need a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test for Operatives certificate. The HS&E Test is a separate assessment and must be booked independently.

You will need a basic understanding of English to complete the course.

What qualification will I get?

Upon successfully passing the end-of-course exam, you will receive a digital certificate confirming completion of the Site Safety Plus Health and Safety Awareness course.

  • Valid for five years

  • Equivalent to the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment

  • Can be used alongside a valid HS&E Test certificate to support a CSCS Labourer Card application.

Completing the course

  • The interactive online course can be completed in as little as five hours

  • Study at your own pace over a period of days or weeks

  • Access the course as many times as you like within your 12-month access period

  • Your progress is automatically saved and tracked.

Taking the exam

Once you have completed all learning modules, you can book your end-of-course exam through your eCourse account.

The exam:

  • Consists of 25 multiple-choice questions

  • Lasts 30 minutes

  • Requires a pass mark of 20 out of 25.

You can choose to take the exam:

  • Online using Pearson VUE remote invigilation

  • At a Pearson VUE test centre.

For online exams, you will need:

  • A desktop computer or laptop (mobile phones and tablets are not compatible)

  • A reliable internet connection

  • A webcam, speakers and microphone

  • Valid photographic ID (passport or UK/EU driving licence).

If you are aged 16–18, a parent or guardian must attend the exam check-in process.

Additional information

  • The first exam attempt is included in the course price

  • A £21 fee applies to exam retakes

  • Learners are limited to three exam attempts

  • The exam must be passed before your 12-month course access expires.

  1. To take the exam online, you must have access to a desktop computer or laptop. Mobile phones and tablets are not supported.

  2. The Health and Safety Awareness exam is different from the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test for Operatives. If you are applying for a CSCS Labourer Card, you will need both.

Taking the exam

The exam:

  • Consists of 20 questions

  • Requires a pass mark of 80%

  • Is completed online within the learning platform.

The course is suitable for anyone working in the design, construction, or maintenance of buildings, with a specific focus on installers.
