Course content

This course includes:

  • An advanced understanding of the relevant legislation and safe working practices

  • The control of company resources

  • Diagnose faults using modern diagnostic equipment on the technologically advanced systems found on modern construction equipment and machinery

  • Advanced and modern power units and associated fuels and components

  • Advanced transmission fault diagnostics and repairs

  • Advanced complex hydraulic systems, diagnostics, and repairs

  • Advanced electrical systems and hydro electrical diagnostic fault finding and repairs

  • How to compile technical reports, repair proposals, quotations, and incident reports.

Knowledge, skills and behaviours

  • Take the initiative in a customer facing role

  • Diagnose and repair complex faults on machinery and plant

  • Supervise junior colleagues

  • Offer advice to customers on machinery selection and repairs.

Teaching and assessment

Typically 36 months, with at least 20% of this time spent in off-the-job training. This length may be reduced if the apprentice already has relevant qualifications, like a Level 2 apprenticeship that satisfies the employer.

College attended in blocks of 1-4 weeks. Training includes classroom theory and practical tasks. This counts towards off-the-job training.

Assessment:

  • Practical tasks and written assignments, with constructive feedback from instructors

  • Log of Progression, detailing learnt knowledge, skills and behaviours

  • End Point Assessments (EPAs) include an online test, practical sessions with questions, an interview, and a portfolio of evidence.

Academic requirements:

While the need to study maths and English qualifications isn’t required for learners aged 19 and over, we believe these skills are important for success. That’s why we include industry-relevant maths and English lessons as part of our courses.

To make sure learners have the right skills to help them successfully achieve their apprenticeship programme, we ask for the below:

Level 2 Apprenticeship:

Maths and English GCSE grades 3-9 (the same as old grades D-A), or equivalent
