This course explains how to safely carry out demolition work on various structures, using both hand and mechanical methods. You’ll also learn how to secure sites, remove hazardous materials and work as part of a wider team to ensure work meets the required standards.

Course content

This course includes:

  • The planning process for demolition operations

  • Demolition procedures and methods

  • Hand and power tools

  • Structures and materials

  • Fuel cutting operations

  • Health, safety and environmental protection

  • Lifting and demolition plant operations

  • Your role in the industry.

You’ll also study personal skills. These include:

  • Maths

  • English

  • Drug and alcohol awareness

  • Time management

Knowledge, skills and behaviours

  • Performing risk assessments and identifying unsafe conditions

  • The correct and safe use of demolition tools and equipment

  • Method statements and how to apply safe systems of work

  • Working safely in high-risk environments (e.g. at height or with hot works)

  • Identifying materials and plan for safe removal

  • Carrying out lifting operations cranes and other plant

  • Clear Communication using appropriate terminology, radios, and hand signals

  • How to work effectively in a team and under supervision.

Teaching and assessment

18 weeks of face-to-face training delivered over 24 months

Block 1: 4 Weeks
Block 2: 2 Weeks
Block 3: 2 Weeks
Block 4: 2 Weeks
Block 5: 2 Weeks
Block 6: 2 Weeks
Block 7: 3 Weeks
Block 8: 1 Week

Assessment:

  • Written and practical assessments

  • Verbal questioning and presentations

  • Multiple-choice tests

  • College and site-based activity journals through Aptem

What you get

  • Level 2 Demolition Operative

  • Level 1 Functional Skills, working towards L2 (must take test)

Entry requirements

Academic requirements:

While the need to study maths and English qualifications isn’t required for learners aged 19 and over, we believe these skills are important for success. That’s why we include industry-relevant maths and English lessons as part of our courses.

To make sure learners have the right skills to help them successfully achieve their apprenticeship programme, we ask for the below:

Level 2 Apprenticeship:

Maths and English GCSE grades 3-9 (the same as old grades D-A), or equivalent

If you don't have these grades, contact our team. We can help you explore your options.

General requirements:

  1. Good level of physical fitness. This course contains strenuous physical activity.

  2. Comfortable working in confined spaces.

  3. Comfortable with heights.

  4. Comfortable wearing PPE/RPE.

  5. Able to work to deadlines.

  6. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.
