This course explores civil engineering principles and the processes involved in health and safety, and levelling and setting out. You'll also learn Building Information Modelling (BIM) and design principles.

Course content

This course includes:

  • Drainage

  • Concrete

  • Levelling and setting out

  • Block paving

  • Kerbing

  • Brickwork

  • Excavation support

  • Working at height

  • Confined space operations

  • Small tools operation

  • Movement of plant

  • Manual handling.

You’ll also study personal skills. These include:

  • Maths

  • English

  • Drug and alcohol awareness

  • Time management

  • Personal organisation.

Teaching and assessment

18 weeks of training over 15 months

Blocks 1 to 7: 2 weeks each

Block 8: 4 Weeks

Regular assessment by:

  • Written and practical assessments

  • Verbal questioning and presentation

  • Multiple-choice testing

  • College and site-based activity journals

  • Evidence of work experience completed through OneFile.

What you get

  • Level 2 Construction Groundworker

  • Level 1 Functional Skills, working towards L2 (must take test)

Entry requirements

Academic requirements:

While the need to study maths and English qualifications isn’t required for learners aged 19 and over, we believe these skills are important for success. That’s why we include industry-relevant maths and English lessons as part of our courses.

To make sure learners have the right skills to help them successfully achieve their apprenticeship programme, we ask for the below:

Level 2 Apprenticeship:

Maths and English GCSE grades 3-9 (the same as old grades D-A), or equivalent

If you don't have these grades, contact our team. We can help you explore your options.

General requirements:

  1. Moderate level of physical fitness. This course includes strenuous physical activity.

  2. Comfortable in small spaces.

  3. Comfortable with heights.

  4. Comfortable wearing PPE/RPE.

  5. Able to meet deadlines.

  6. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.

Apprenticeship grants are available for eligible employers. For further information please visit our grant pages.

Skills England (DfE) applicants are only guaranteed full funding if this is their first training scheme and they are aged between 16 and 18.
