Scottish Crane Operative Apprenticeship

This two-year course teaches how to safely operate cranes and carry out basic maintenance and checks. You’ll also learn the duties of an ‘appointed person’, including conducting risk assessments and produce method statements.

Course content

This course includes:

  • Mobile Crane, Crawler Crane or Tower Crane

  • Slinger/Signaller

  • Telescopic Handler

  • MEWPS (Boom & Scissor)

  • Forward Tipping Dumper (non CPCS)

  • Plant and Vehicle Marshaller (non CPCS).

You’ll also study personal skills. These include:

  • Maths

  • English

  • Communication

  • Teaching and assessment.

Knowledge, skills and behaviours

  • Employment responsibilities and rights

  • Health and safety

  • Drug and alcohol awareness

  • Appointed person lifting operations.

Teaching and assessment

Year 1:

13 weeks classroom-based theory and practical training, with assessments

Year 2:

  • Work-based experience with your employer

  • A site visit to assess you for the SVQ Level 5 in Plant Operations

After course completion, you will get a blue CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) card for the selected Crane used in the apprenticeship.

This excludes the Slinger/Signaller and Telescopic Handler categories, which are on the red CPCS card. These can be changed to a blue card for an additional cost.

Academic requirements:

To help us assess your suitability for this course, you’ll need to

  • Complete a skills learning exercise

  • Complete a questionnaire

  • Take part in an informal discussion

  • Possibly attend college for further tests

There are no formal academic requirements for this course, but National 5 grades A-D in English and Maths are useful.

  1. Good communication skills.
