Course content

This course includes:

  • Independent scaffolds

  • Birdcage scaffolds

  • Tower scaffolds

  • Cantilever scaffolds

  • Pavement scaffolds

  • Roof scaffolds

  • General workplace safety

  • Efficient work practices

  • Manual handling practices

  • Use of fall protection equipment.

You’ll also study personal skills. These include:

  • Maths

  • English

  • Drug and alcohol awareness

  • Fairness, inclusion and respect

  • Personal organisation

  • Meta-skills.

Knowledge, skills and behaviours

  • Interpreting drawings

  • Estimating resourcing

  • Basic building methods

  • Building elements.

Teaching and assessment

8 weeks teaching over 18-24 months. This is split into blocks of 1 or 2 weeks, with 3 months of site experience between.

When the college course is complete, there are 6 further months of site experience before the final assessment.

Week 1 to 2: College induction

Week 3: Part 1A

Weeks 4 to 5: Part 1B

Week 6: Part 2A

Weeks 7 to 8: Part 2B

Week 9: Final assessment

Regular assessment by:

  • Written and practical assessments

  • Verbal questioning and presentation

  • Multiple-choice testing

  • College and site-based activity journals

What you get

  • SCQF Level 5 in Accessing and Rigging Occupations: Scaffolding

  • The Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme (CISRS) Card

  • Level 4 ICT Skills.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements:

There are no formal academic requirements for this course.

General requirements:

  1. Moderate level of physical fitness. Contact us if you’re not sure you meet requirements.

  2. Comfortable wearing PPR/RPE.

  3. Able to do independent research.

  4. Able to work to deadline.

  5. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.
