Occupational Relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • operative and craft
  • supervision
  • management and leadership

Standard Classification

Lifetime

Purpose

The purpose of this standard to enable learners to learn how to use a Robotic Total Station. The content is relevant to all types of construction including earthworks, roads, houses, buildings, foundations, piles, structural steel, structures, and reinforced concrete. Scope:

  • setting position and orientation using pre-established control points
  • create a local coordinate system
  • accuracy
  • connecting the controller with the total station
  • navigation
  • topographical survey
  • data management
  • on-board functionality
  • select the prism constant
  • uploading, downloading
  • extracting line data
  • measuring irregular areas and volumes
  • importing and exporting data

Instruction Supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • A train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • Successfully completed training to this standard
  • A verifiable CV demonstrating experience as a site engineer across a broad range of construction projects (civils, building etc.) and current experience / CPD in the use of modern topographical equipment

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment. All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation. The class size and learner/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes. The following delivery methods shall be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • face to face learning environment only (Such As Classroom/Workshop etc.)
  • a blend of face to face and virtual
  • a blend of face to face and e-learning This standard is predominantly practical training This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level

Assessment

Informally Assessed For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the learner has achieved all learning outcomes.

Quality Assurance

Assured Quality Assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard. CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the Training Organisation can meet the requirements of the Training Standard. Approved Training Organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB Quality Assurance team.

Learning Outcomes

The learner will be able to:
  • Navigate stored information
  • View, edit, add, and delete data
  • Enter correct atmospheric settings
  • Set the correct target type and prism constant
  • Take a topographical survey and record results systematically
  • Describe the pros and cons of preset code lists vs creating your own
  • Stake out points of known co-ordinates
  • Stake out points in relation to a given line
  • Set out points at given chainages and offsets along a radius
  • Import and export data
  • Set position and orientation of Total Station using pre-established control points
  • Set up arbitrary local coordinate system
  • Enter data into controller manually
  • Connect controller with the Total Station
  • View line data
  • Measure irregular areas and volumes
  • Import and work with .DXF (Drawing Interchange Format) and Digital Terrain Models (DTMs)
  • Create and work with DTMs
  • Enter correct settings

Additional Information

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • Students studying Civil Engineering or Construction Management at any level
  • Trainee Engineers and Construction Managers who are required to use a robotic total station
  • Graduate Engineers and Construction Managers
  • Those who are familiar with the use of non-robotic total stations and would like to increase their productivity Those who have completed the 18 hour course ‘Total Station for construction’ and would like to transfer their skills to a robotic total station.
