Overview

This research set out to help employers, current workers and potential new entrants understand the benefits of working in the construction sector, and the value that qualifications and training bring to careers and businesses.

To build this picture, the study combined statistical analysis with employer and employee insight. It assessed how qualifications influence key labour market outcomes—such as earnings and likelihood of employment—and explored how employers in the construction and built environment sector view and use qualifications within their workforce. Through surveys and in depth interviews with both employers and employees, the research captured real experiences of completing qualifications and the impact these have had on career development and workplace performance.

The findings show a clear link between qualifications, improved employment prospects and stronger business outcomes. They also highlight the need for ongoing investment in training and for employers to recognise the value of structured development pathways.

CITB encourages employers to continue supporting skills development and to use these insights to strengthen their workforce strategies. Employees and prospective entrants are encouraged to explore construction qualifications as a route to better job opportunities and long term career progression. CITB will continue to work with industry partners to promote training, enhance sector understanding and help more people build successful futures in construction.
