Project summary

In collaboration with the National Association of Shopfitters (NAS), the Institute of Carpenters (IoC) delivers a dedicated mentoring and retention programme designed to support new entrants during the critical early stages of their construction careers. Following the success of the initial project, the programme has been extended for a further year, enabling additional learners and employers to benefit from enhanced retention support.

Over the lifetime of the project, the IoC and NAS will support 256 new entrants into the construction industry. Working in partnership with Lincoln College, West Suffolk College (Bury St Edmunds) and Exeter College, the programme provides a coordinated support network that helps learners successfully transition into employment and remain within the sector.

The project offers tailored, person-centred support to address the barriers that can affect retention, recognising that every new entrant's circumstances and needs are unique. Through regular mentoring, coaching and wellbeing-focused interventions, participants receive practical guidance to help them overcome workplace, personal and professional challenges, improving confidence, resilience and long-term career prospects.

The IoC and NAS also work closely with employers, training providers, recruitment agencies and industry partners to identify employment and progression opportunities for participants. By leveraging these established relationships, the programme helps match individuals with suitable roles while supporting employers to develop and retain skilled staff.

By combining employer engagement, personalised mentoring and industry-wide collaboration, the programme aims to improve retention, support workforce development and contribute to a stronger and more sustainable construction industry.
