Project summary

The STC Group delivered the Connect with Construction programme, a CITB-funded mentoring and employment support initiative designed to help new entrants successfully transition from training into work within the construction industry. The project supported 29 new entrants during the early stages of their employment, providing personalised guidance aimed at improving confidence, resilience and long-term career prospects.

Building on the employability support already delivered through STC's construction training programmes, the project extended assistance beyond job entry, enabling learners to access mentoring throughout their first year in employment. This included the development of Individual Employment Support Plans, regular one-to-one reviews, career guidance and tailored support to address workplace and personal challenges. The programme was delivered in partnership with employers including Places for London, Breyer, Balfour Beatty, Insight, Aston Group and Kinovo, alongside recruitment agencies, local authorities, Jobcentre Plus offices and specialist referral organisations.

These partnerships helped create employment opportunities while ensuring participants had access to ongoing support once in work. Participants benefited from a wide range of interventions, including mentoring, wellbeing support, financial guidance, employability advice, career development opportunities and access to the STC Learner Hub. Employer engagement activities, including workplace reviews, buddy arrangements and management support, helped to strengthen communication and provide additional support during the critical early months of employment.

Feedback from learners highlighted the value of having an independent source of support to help navigate challenges both inside and outside the workplace. The project demonstrated how targeted mentoring and wraparound support can help new entrants build confidence, access development opportunities and establish sustainable careers within the construction sector.
