Project Summary

Challenge

Apprenticeships play a critical role in attracting and developing the future construction workforce, yet apprenticeship achievement rates remain a significant challenge for the industry. Evidence shows that many apprentices fail to complete their End Point Assessment (EPA), limiting opportunities for career progression and reducing the number of competent, qualified individuals entering the sector.

Research undertaken by Chartway Partnerships Group and SDN identified a key contributing factor: many line managers lack confidence and understanding of their role in supporting apprentices throughout their learning journey. Managers often have limited awareness of apprenticeship requirements, knowledge, skills and behaviours, assessment processes and the support apprentices need to successfully progress and complete their qualification.

Without effective support from managers, apprentices can feel disengaged, struggle to evidence competence and become less likely to complete their training. This not only impacts individual learners but also contributes to skills shortages across the wider construction industry.

Solution

Chartway Partnerships Group has partnered with SDN to develop Build Great Apprentices, a training programme designed specifically for construction line managers responsible for supporting apprentices.

The programme aims to equip managers with the knowledge, confidence and practical tools needed to support apprentices from induction through to final assessment. By improving manager capability, the project seeks to improve apprentice retention, achievement and long-term progression within the construction sector.

The training combines live learning sessions, on-demand resources and digital support tools, creating flexible learning opportunities that can be accessed alongside day-to-day work responsibilities. Resources are designed to be practical, engaging and relevant to managers supporting apprentices from Levels 2 to 6.

Key topics include:

  • Understanding the role of the apprenticeship line manager

  • Supporting apprentices to develop required knowledge, skills and behaviours

  • Effective coaching and feedback techniques

  • Maintaining apprentice motivation and engagement

  • Understanding apprenticeship assessment requirements

  • Preparing apprentices for successful achievement

  • Recognising and responding to challenges faced by apprentices

  • Creating positive and supportive workplace cultures

The programme includes six live training sessions, a suite of on-demand learning videos, digital fact sheets and practical resources that managers can use throughout the apprenticeship journey. Training materials are being developed in collaboration with construction employers to ensure they reflect real workplace challenges and industry needs.
