Project Summary

Challenge

Small and micro construction businesses often struggle to adopt digital technology despite the significant productivity benefits it can offer. While the market contains a growing range of digital tools and software solutions, many businesses lack the confidence, knowledge and support needed to identify the right systems, evaluate available options and successfully embed technology into their day-to-day operations.

For many SME builders, barriers include limited time, a lack of independent advice, uncertainty around return on investment and concerns about introducing change within established teams and supply chains. These challenges can result in missed opportunities to improve efficiency, communication, job management, pricing accuracy and overall business performance.

Solution

Solving Tech for Small Builders is a technology adoption programme designed specifically for small construction businesses. The project combined a live cohort-based training programme with a digital learning platform to help business owners better understand, assess and implement technology within their organisations.

The programme was delivered in two phases. Phase one consisted of a structured twelve-week live programme that guided participants through the process of identifying business challenges, exploring digital solutions and embedding technology into existing business processes. Participants learned how to assess software options, evaluate return on investment, manage change within their businesses and develop long-term digital improvement plans.

The second phase transformed the learning into a national online training programme, allowing small builders across the UK to access the content on demand. The programme was supported by workbooks, practical exercises, peer learning opportunities and live support sessions to encourage technology adoption and continuous improvement.

Throughout the project, learners reported adopting new technologies including AI-assisted administration tools, digital job management systems and process improvements that reduced administration time and increased business confidence.

Impact

The live programme demonstrated significant impact on learner confidence and technology adoption. Participants reported increased awareness of available digital solutions, improved confidence when selecting systems and practical implementation of technologies within their businesses. Average learner confidence increased by more than 76% during the programme.

The project also generated valuable insight for the wider construction industry. While the live cohort model achieved strong engagement and behavioural change, the online programme highlighted the challenges of relying solely on self-paced learning. The findings showed that builders are more likely to complete learning and apply it in practice when supported through structured, community-based and time-bound delivery models. These lessons are helping shape future approaches to digital skills and technology adoption support for SME construction businesses.
