Project Summary

Challenge

The construction industry faces a significant challenge in delivering the skilled workforce needed to support both the UK's housing ambitions and its transition to net zero. Timber-based Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) have been identified as a key solution to delivering sustainable homes at scale, yet the industry currently lacks the training pathways, accredited learning opportunities and competency frameworks needed to support widespread adoption.

Although investment in timber manufacturing capacity is increasing, there remains a shortage of professionals with the specialist knowledge required to manage, deliver and install timber construction systems. Existing provision is fragmented, with limited progression routes from vocational training through to higher education and professional development.

The project identified significant gaps in current timber construction training, particularly in relation to modern timber technologies, sustainability, project management and competency development.

Solution

In partnership with industry, education and professional bodies, Donaldson Timber Systems is developing accredited learning pathways for timber construction and modern methods of construction, helping build the skills required for low-carbon construction. The project will leave a legacy of training resources and accredited courses aligned to the Timber in Construction Policy Roadmap.

Key activities include:

  • Reviewing, mapping and enhancing existing timber construction training provision

  • Developing new accredited timber and MMC learning materials

  • Creating clear progression pathways from education into industry

  • Delivering pilot training programmes and train-the-trainer sessions

  • Establishing regional learning hubs across the UK

  • Creating learning resources linked to live construction scenarios

  • Measuring the impact of training on live construction projects

  • Sharing resources and learning through webinars, events and digital platforms
