Levy Return and how to send

Once your business is registered with CITB, you need to send a Levy Return. We use the return to assess how much levy your business pays. You also need to complete a return in order to claim CITB grants.

Who must send a Levy Return

Under the Industrial Training Act, you must send a Levy Return each year if you are an employer in the construction industry.

You need to submit a return even if you don’t train any workers.

When to send your Levy Return

2016

The deadline for sending your 2016 Levy Return was 31 December 2016. If you miss the deadline, you won’t receive any further grants for training that took place in the 2016/17 grants scheme year.

However, Levy Returns that were submitted late due to technical issues will be treated as if they had been sent by the 31 December 2016 deadline. Grant claims authorised after 20 December 2016 will not be paid until the week commencing 9 January 2017.

2017

In spring 2017, we’ll send you a paper Levy Return. You need to complete your return within 30 days of receiving this form.

If you have not yet registered with CITB, or only recently registered, it can take several months before you receive your first levy return form. The time this takes depends on the date you registered.

Ways to send your Levy Return

You can choose to send your Levy Return online or by post.

1. Online

You can submit your Levy Return online. You need to register for this service before you can submit your return.

This is an improved service, which launched in November 2016. If you used our online levy service prior to this, your login will not work and you will need to register again.

To register for the online service, email levygrant.online@citb.co.uk with the details below. We’ll then send you a login so you can activate your online account. Make sure you have your details to hand when you activate your account.

  • Your CITB registration number
  • Your company name
  • Your first name and surname
  • Your email address – we’ll send your login to this address
  • Your telephone number.

If you have already registered for the online service, submit your Levy Return online.

2. By post

Complete the Levy Return form we send you in spring 2017, and return it to the address on the form within 30 days of receiving it.

After you submit your Levy Return

  1. CITB verifies returns for accuracy. You will need to keep records of your payroll and subcontractor payments for at least three tax years as you may be asked to provide these.
  2. We calculate how much levy you need to pay and send you a Levy Assessment Notice.
  3. You pay the levy.
