Construction employers are invited to be part of a pioneering new initiative delivered by CITB in partnership with the Ministry of Justice, through the New Futures Network Unlocking Construction campaign.

For the first time, we are bringing construction skills competitions into prisons across England. This unique pilot programme will take place between 1-17 June 2026 with one-day events at participating establishments.

This initiative not only showcases the abilities of motivated individuals but also directly supports social value commitments, helping to transform lives through employment and contributes to building a stronger, more sustainable construction workforce.

We’re offering two impactful ways for organisations to participate:

Competition judging

Play a key role in the event by becoming a competition judge. You will be asked to assess competitors work, observe safe ways of working, and support a competition atmosphere. The competition project will be created and provided by CITB, and you will receive full guidance and support on competition etiquette and the expectations of your role in advance.

To take part, you should have occupational knowledge and experience within one of the four categories of competition: Bricklaying, Joinery, Painting and Decorating, or Plastering.

Not from any of these occupational roles? Please feel free to pass this invitation along to anyone within your company, network or supply chain who you think it will be of interest to.

Employer support

As a construction industry employer, you can support this initiative and in turn help:

  • Deliver meaningful social value, supporting rehabilitation and reducing reoffending through employment pathways

  • Help address the construction industry’s ongoing skills shortage by identifying new, untapped talent

  • Demonstrate your commitment to inclusive recruitment and community impact

  • Strengthen the future workforce by supporting individuals ready to build careers in construction.

Your involvement will make a real difference – helping to inspire talent, strengthen the industry and support positive change. We would be delighted to work with you to schedule a date that suits your availability for any of the following participating establishments:
