Construction Skills Network forecast 2019-2023 - UK

The demand for construction jobs will rise in the period 2019-2023. Construction employment is expected to reach 2.79 million in 2023, just 2% lower than its 2008 peak.

According to the latest Construction Skills Network (CSN) report 2019-2023:

  • Construction output will grow by 1.3% a year
  • 168,500 construction jobs will be created, up from the 2018-2022 figure of 158,000
  • Public housing (3.2%) has surpassed infrastructure (1.9%) as the sector predicted to see the best growth in the next five years.
  • The most buoyant of the English regions are projected to be West Midlands and the South West with growth at 2.3% and 2.2% respectively.
  • Wales, which led the growth rankings for four successive years, has seen a significant reduction in growth due to Hitachi’s recent announcement that the Wylfa new nuclear build project has been put on hold.
  • Like Wales, construction output in Scotland is expected to grow by an annual average of 0.5% from 2019-23, leading to marginal employment growth over the period.

The jobs most in demand over the next five years in the UK will be:

  • Other construction process managers (3,420)
