About the health, safety and environment test

The CITB Health, safety & environment test helps raise standards across the industry.

It should be used as a stepping stone for employers and their workforce to develop their knowledge even further. Find out more below:

CITB HS&E Test price increase, now live

The CITB HS&E test price is now £21. Any tests booked from today will cost £21, along with any vouchers purchased today.

This increase allows CITB to continue to reinvest in a product that meets the expanding health and safety requirements of construction, as well as keep up to date with developments in how best to assess the application of knowledge.

About the test

CITB is reviewing the Health, safety and environment (HS&E) test to ensure that it continues to contribute towards a qualified workforce with the right knowledge, skills and training.

All tests last for 45 minutes and have 50 questions. The test now includes two new question styles. The content of the questions will not change but a few questions may be presented in a different way. Information regarding the changes, the new question styles and what is happening in the future can be found here. The test will still be made up of behavioural case studies and knowledge questions to check your understanding of how to behave and raise your awareness of health, safety and environmental issues.

Tests available

All tests include the behavioural case study questions and the five core knowledge sections of:

  • Legal and management
  • Health and welfare
  • General safety
  • High risk activities
  • Environment

The Operatives test ensures workers have a minimum level of health, safety and environmental awareness before going on site.

The Labourer test (including L1 award) is no longer available as of 7th February, this test was in place solely as the end test for the Cskills Awards Qualification AWD057, Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment.

If you are registered with an NOCN Cskills Awards approved centre for this qualification your end test will now be available through that centre; please contact that centre for detail on taking this test.
