What is this course about?

This one-day awareness level course is designed to introduce learners to health and safety in the tunnelling environment. Delegates will learn how to be aware of the hazards and risks associated with a tunnelling environment, and common tunnelling methods. This course is purely theoretical in its delivery and assessment.

Is this course right for me?

This course is for those involved in the tunnel construction industry as a member of the workforce, to help with understanding a variety of different health and safety aspects of the industry, the associated working environment and some of the potential hazards of working on a tunnelling site.

What are the course aims?

The course aims to help workers learn more about:

• Tunnelling-related confined spaces

• Shaft and surface operations

• Tunnel construction

• Tunnelling plant and equipment

• Control of underground plant during tunnelling operations

• Emergency arrangements for tunnelling

• Occupational health, first aid and underground personal protective equipment.

Are there any entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, we would recommend that delegates have achieved one, or more, of the following:

• Six months’ experience in a construction environment

• Completion of the Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) course

• Completion of the Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives (HS&E Test).

Where can I take this course?

This course can be taken in a classroom or via remote delivery, whatever suits you best.

How long is the certificate valid for?

Certification for this course is valid for five years. To stay certified in this area, you will need to retake the course before the expiry date.
