This two-year apprenticeship covers the theory of built-up felt roofing alongside comprehensive practical training.
Course content
This course includes:
- Building methods and construction technology
- Preparing, applying and maintaining built-up bituminous roofing
- Preparing background surfaces and materials and components
- Storing resources ready for use
- Providing setting out for applied waterproof membranes
- Repairing surface defects
- Applying materials to the structural fabric
- Use of techniques such as torch-on and roll and pour
- Establishing the suitability of the work area and access equipment.
You’ll also study personal skills. These include:
- Maths
- English
- Communications
- Employment responsibilities and rights
- Health and safety
- Drug and alcohol awareness
- Safe use of ladders
- Manual handling.
Knowledge, skills and behaviours
- Contributing to efficient working practices
- Safe working practices in construction
- Information, quantities and communicating with others.
Teaching and assessment
In years one and two, you’ll spend nine weeks at college in training blocks throughout the year.
Between these blocks, you’ll train on site with your employer to develop your work-based skills and knowledge.
Assessment:
- Written and practical tests (mapped to Diploma and SVQ Diploma competence levels)
- A practical summary task
- Online multiple-choice test
- We’ll also visit you on site to see if you meet the SVQ Level 2 for Built-up Felt Roofing.

- SVQ in Waterproof Membrane Roofing Systems (Construction) (Reinforced Bitumen Membrane Roofing) at SCQF Level 5
Entry requirements
Academic requirements:
There are no formal academic requirements for this course, but National 4 grades A*-C in English, Maths and Technology will be useful.
General requirements:
- Good communication skills.
- Moderate level of physical fitness. Contact us if you’re not sure you meet requirements.
- Comfortable with heights.
- Technical know-how.
