This course teaches the theory of drywall finishing (Ames taping) alongside comprehensive practical experience.

Course content

The course includes:

  • Ames taping
  • Finishing linings, ceilings and encasements
  • Working at height
  • Small tools operation
  • Manual handling.

You’ll also study personal skills. These include:

  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Drug and alcohol awareness
  • Time management
  • Personal organisation.

  • Interpreting information
  • Risk assessments and method statements
  • Construction elements
  • Effective communication
  • Building information modelling (BIM)
  • Basic project management
  • Site communication
  • Health and safety.

Teaching and assessment

15 weeks of training over 18 months 

Week 1: Remote induction carried out via Teams meeting

Weeks 2 to 13: Theoretical and practical training at NCC Scotland in two-week blocks

Weeks 14 to 15: Final assessments

Assessment:

  • Written and practical assessments
  • Verbal questioning and presentation
  • Multiple-choice testing
  • College and site-based activity journals.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements:

Entry L3 Maths and English

You’ll need to complete a skills learning exercise to help us assess your suitability for this course. Further tests at college are also possible.

General requirements:

  1. Good level of physical fitness. This course includes strenuous physical activity.
  2. Comfortable working at heights.
  3. Comfortable working in confined spaces.
  4. Comfortable wearing PPE/RPE.
  5. Able to work to deadlines.
  6. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.
