This two-year course explores how to build, maintain and repair public highways and footpaths.
It’s ideal for anyone who wants a civil engineering career, specialising in highways.
EUSR Cat 1 to 3 available as an add-on.
Course content
The course includes:
- Establishing work area protection
- Segregation of highway works
- Locating and protecting utilities in the highway
- Excavations
- Reinstatement of highways.
You’ll also study personal skills. These include:
- Maths
- English
- Communication
- Employment responsibilities and rights
- Health and safety
- Drug and alcohol awareness
- Safe use of ladders
- Manual handling
- Safe use of small plant
- Teaching and assessment.
Knowledge, skills and behaviours
- Interpreting information
- Estimating resources
- Basic building methods
- Building elements.
Teaching and assessment
18 weeks of training at NCC covering classroom-based theory and simulated site activities
The remaining time is spent with your employer, gaining experience on site
Assessment
- Written and practical assessments (mapped to Diploma and NVQ Diploma competence levels)
- A site visit by an assessor
- A practical challenge showing all your learning
- Online multiple-choice assessment test.

Entry requirements
Academic requirements:
While the need to study maths and English qualifications isn’t required for learners aged 19 and over, we believe these skills are important for success. That’s why we include industry-relevant maths and English lessons as part of our courses.
To make sure learners have the right skills to help them successfully achieve their apprenticeship programme, we ask for the below:
Level 2 Apprenticeship:
- Maths and English GCSE grades 3-9 (the same as old grades D-A), or equivalent

General requirements:
- Good level of physical fitness. Contact us if you’re unsure you meet these requirements.
- Able to problem solve.
- Able to work in teams.
- Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.

Apprenticeship grants are available for eligible employers. For further information please visit our grant pages.
Skills England (DfE) applicants are only guaranteed full funding if this is their first training scheme and they are aged between 16 and 18.
