A 2-day condensed course for those with experience of dump trucks with articulated chassis, who need a formal qualification.

Course content

  • Introduction – CPCS scheme, operator responsibilities, health and safety basics
  • Machine knowledge – Main parts, functions, limits, and controls
  • Pre-start checks – Daily inspections and reporting defects
  • Operation skills – Starting, driving, steering, stopping, and manoeuvring
  • Loading and tipping – Safe loading, transporting, and dumping of materials
  • Site safety – Identifying hazards, working on rough terrain, exclusion zones
  • Shut down – Parking, securing, and post-operation checks
  • Test preparation – Theory review and practical mock exercises

Entry requirements

  1. CITB HS&E test passed within the last two years. 
  2. Good spoken and written English
  3. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.

This course is for you if you can:
  • Name and explain principle components, controls, purpose and terminology
  • Undertake pre-start running checks in line with manufacturer's manual and legislation
  • Configure the machine for site and highway travel
  • Travel in forward and reverse, through restrictions, confined areas, on level ground, on undulating ground and inclines, in an unladen/laden condition, and be competent in hill-start procedures
  • Explain the actions required for hazards, both above and below ground
  • Position the machine to receive loads
  • Discharge the load into trenches and over edges
  • Explain the importance of maintaining a safe and tidy working area
  • Carry out shutdown and securing procedures
  • Explain loading and unloading procedure for machine transportation
