Duration

Minimum 2 days of 6 learning hours per day.

Purpose/Scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the candidate with the initial knowledge and skills to develop their preparation techniques for applying sealants.

The scope of this standard covers:

• safety measures and personal protective equipment (PPE)
• tools and materials
• prepare joints
• cleaning and dusting
• grinding and cutting
• old sealant removal
• packing
• taping
• priming
• clean tools and disposal of waste.

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational groups:

• operative and craft
• supervision.

Candidate pre-requisites

The candidate pre-requisite for this course is the BS8000 part 16 code of practice course.

Instruction/Supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

• a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
• successfully completed training to this standard
• achieved the NVQ Level 2 Certificate in joint sealant application
• a verifiable CV.

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes, and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may/may not be used in the delivery of this standard:

• classroom
• workshop.

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more practical training.

This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.

Assessment

Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard are:

For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete a practical assessment.

Quality assurance

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

No renewal/refreshment requirements - There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

Learning outcomes

The candidate will be able to:

• Demonstrate the various methods of grinding and cutting available whilst safely operating the correct tools & equipment and employing the correct techniques
  
  
• Demonstrate the various methods of old sealant removal available whilst safely operating the correct tools & equipment and employing the correct techniques
  
  
• Identify which packing methods available are to be used, namely:
  • type
  • sizing
  • round
  • flat.
    
    
• Select the correct tools and materials to be able to perform the task in hand efficiently and safely
  
  
• Use measuring tools
  
  
• Identify when taping is required and select suitable materials, tools and equipment as necessary
  
  
• Identify when priming is required and select suitable materials, tools and equipment as necessary for the following surfaces types:
  • Porous
  • Non Porous.
    
    
• Interpret COSHH information from manufacturer spec. sheets, and other sources of information to assist in choice of PPE, emergency actions in case of accident and environmentally safe means of disposal
  
  
• Identify the importance of method statements & risk assessment in the safety process
  
  
• Read and interpret job sheets to identify correct tools and materials, and will understand company stock record systems
  
  
• Describe the risks involved in using grinding and cutting equipment and be aware of safety issues including PPE and abrasive wheel inspection/changing
  
  
• Demonstrate an awareness of asbestos materials and reporting procedures if its presence is suspected
  
  
• Identify the various types of packing medium, the materials involved and the dimensions that have to be considered, namely size and depth
  
  
• List the uses/applications of taping, what materials are employed and what tools are available
  
  
• Interpret information from specification sheets as to:
  • material active life
  • curing times
  • technical data (including any relevant H&S information and emergency procedures in case of accidental spillage, inhalation or ingestion)
  • expiry dates – their significance
  • method of use – including any PPE
  • mixing techniques – including whether ventilated areas are required and why)
  • masking
  • storage requirements.
