Rooftop Safety Training

Duration

Minimum 1 day of 6 learning hours

Purpose/scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to support the safe use of different types of anchor systems, pre use inspections and correct fitting of fall arrest harnesses.

Scope:

• safety legislation, working at height regulations
• risk assessment and method statement
• weather conditions
• types of roof coverings
• rooftop safe systems of work
• the emergency and rescue plan
• means of access
• edge protection
• fragility and exclusion areas
• rescue provision requirements
• temporary lifelines
• fall arrest and fall restraint systems
• tie-off and anchor points
• work positioning systems
• checking and fitting of harnesses and FPE
• means of access and accessing a roof safely
• common causes of accidents on a roof

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational groups:

• operative and craft
• supervision

Delegate pre-requisites

Delegates must be over 18 and physically fit. They should have no medical conditions that might prevent them working at height and have an aptitude for working at height.

Instruction/supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

• minimum AET, PTTLS,
• harness user/inspector qualification and preferably rescue training with a minimum of 6 months experience in delivering the courses
• a work at height qualification (i.e. PASMA, IPAF, Ladder instructor) with a minimum of 6 months experience in delivering
• a minimum of IOSH Managing Safely preferably NEBOSH General CERT
• successfully completed training to this standard
• at least 2 years relevant industrial experience
• a verifiable CV

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes. The trainer to delegate ratio should not exceed 1:6.

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

• classroom

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more practical training.

This standard is considered to be set at a basic level.

Assessment 

For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the delegate has achieved all learning outcomes.

The delegates must also complete a multiple-choice assessment that must cover all learning outcomes. A minimum of 10 questions must be asked, the delegate is required to achieve an overall pass mark of at least 80%.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.
