This five-day course teaches beginners to safely access load size and weight, choose and maintain lifting gear and communicate with crane operators.

It is people with little or no experience of slinging and signalling who want to work in the lifting industry. Those who already have experience and need a formal qualification may prefer our condensed course instead.

After you've passed the course, we'll apply for your CPCS Trained Operator Card (red card).

Course content

The course includes:

  • Assess the size and weight of loads
  • Clear communication with crane operators
  • How to safely choose, attach and detach appropriate lifting tackle
  • Checking, maintaining and storing lifting accessories.

Teaching and assessment

Four days of classroom-based tutorials and practical exercises

One day of CPCS technical tests

What you get

CPCS Trained Operator Card (red card), which we'll apply for on your behalf

CITB National Construction College Certificate available on request

Entry requirements

  1. CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test passed within last two years or CPCS Plant Operative Health, Safety and Environment Test pass.
  2. Good spoken and written English.
  3. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.
