Kate McLeod from Calmax Construction Limited loves NCC

Level 2 Plant Operator Apprentice Kate tells us about her experience at CITB National Construction College (NCC) and in particular the support she received from the Welfare team.

From the first day I started college, the welfare team welcomed us with open arms and were always more than happy to help with anything we needed advice on. It was a huge relief just knowing that support was available and that we weren’t alone so far from home, as I know it was quite daunting for a few of us.

The longer I was at college, the closer I got with the welfare team, and in particular Keith, Ali, and Rachael. I miss our daily yarns and catch-ups — it quickly became part of my routine and I’m so grateful for the time we spent laughing and talking, and most of all just being there and knowing they were all there whenever I needed anything.

I’m so grateful for the time I spent at college and the experience and knowledge I gained to further my career in ways that wouldn’t be possible if I hadn’t started my apprenticeship. The knowledge and experience I gained is so important to me — I will never forget how much all the staff at college helped me and wanted the best for me. I’ll be forever grateful for that and I wish I could repay that in some way one day.

When talking to Keith, I could rant on and there was no judgement or a feeling I was boring him — he would sit there and listen to all my small inconveniences, and I was always met with kind, very wise, knowledgeable advice and a relaxed outside perspective on things. He always gave a bird's-eye view on any situation, made sure my opinions were heard, and never judged whatever the topic of conversation.

The last block of college was possibly the best month of my life. Even though I’m only 16, it truly was — it was the happiest month of my life and I’ll never forget it. I made so many memories that will be with me forever and I hope to have the opportunity to go back to college again at some point in my future career.
