Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram and CITB CEO Tim Balcon today signed a first-of-its-kind training agreement to tackle an estimated shortfall of 9,000 building workers in the region. The landmark collaboration between the Combined Authority (CA) and the CITB marks a major step forward in ensuring the region has the skilled workforce needed to deliver ambitious housing, retrofit and infrastructure projects.
Registrations open for SkillBuild 2026
The registrations for SkillBuild, the UK’s largest and longest-running multi-trade skills competition, delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), are now open. SkillBuild invites the UK’s top construction trainee talent, skilled learners and apprentices to battle it out to be crowned winners of their chosen trade.
Third phase of plant training standards launching in March
March 2026 will see the launch of phase three of CITB’s new plant training standards. CITB and the Plant Sector Representative Organisation (PSRO) have been working together closely to standardise plant training across the construction industry. This has seen the introduction of short-course training standards for plant categories that reflect the increased requirements and responsibilities for plant operators.
